INSERTION OF SPEED HOOKS To prevent interference between hook and archwire, lingual offset bends have been incorporated into each SPEED Hook creating the designation of positive (+) or negative (-). When choosing a hook, follow the quadrant designation below, as this ensures the proper fit of the hook into the auxiliary slot. After selecting the shape of the required hook and determining the direction from which the hook is to be inserted, reference the quadrant chart to find out whether a + or - hook is needed. For example, the + hook is used for the patient’s upper right and lower left, if inserted from the distal. 26 SPEED Hooks are offset to avoid archwire interference. What makes this hook unique is that the mesial and distal sides of the hook have been removed. Its profile is of a normal Mushroom Hook, but it is virtually unnoticeable when viewed from the front. Designed for use with anterior elastomerics, this comfortably rounded hook is available on both Central and Lateral Incisor brackets. Grasp the hook with the appropriate pliers and insert the tapered end of the hook carefully into the auxiliary slot. Once inserted, push the hook home and bend the softened projecting end over toward the gingival to prevent the hook from escaping. It is recommended that the hook end be bent through an angle of not more than 45° as this will make removal easier. Hooks can be inserted with the archwire in place and it is not necessary to have the Spring Clip in its slot open position when inserting SPEED Hooks. All SPEED Hooks are made of .016 square wire and are suitable for use in either the .018 or the .022 archwire slot systems.
